The key Tizen principles of Openness, Flow, Curiosity, and Focus provide the foundation for modeling a well-balanced UI communication strategy for the broad Tizen audience that includes both entry-level and more technically experienced users.
To demonstrate the friendliness and informal air of communication associated with open OS communities, use the work paradigm, A Positive FOCUS, to support the clear and concise communication that Tizen aims to embrace.
Active vs. Passive Voice
Use the active voice to make your messaging more direct and easier to understand. To determine the voice within a sentence, ask yourself a few simple questions about the implied subject in relation to the action, as shown in the following example:
Example : Incoming calls, alarms, or media can be muted by placing your hand on the screen while the screen is on.
Q. What is the grammatical subject?
A. Incoming calls.
Q. What is the action in this sentence?
A. Muting the calls.
Q. Does the subject (the calls) do the muting?
A. No, placing your hand on the screen mutes the calls. As the original subject doesn’t take any direct action, the sentence is passive and must be changed to active voice.

Exceptionally, use the passive voice when extra tact and diplomacy is required. By focusing on the person or object experiencing the action, draw attention away from the person performing the action when error reporting and in other scenarios where the subject of the action is unimportant or unknown.
Be wary of any voice shift in your sentencing.
Positive Language
Think positively, emphasise user control, and don’t blame the user. Develop language that enhances the user’s interaction with the product, and avoid words that might have any negative connotation.
Conversely, it is not always easy to remain positive. Indeed, trying to put a positive spin on a recurring error message can become a cause of irritation and annoyance for the end user. In these instances, simply leave out unnecessary details and simply describe the recovery action – using a neutral language without blaming the user.

Friendly and Informal Tone
Establish and nurture a rapport between the device and user by developing an informal and personal tone within your writing. Avoid slang and dialect, and selectively use contractions (don’t, can’t, etc.) to enhance flow and cadence within your communication.
Aim to create a natural, relaxed, and personal dialog with the user. Without impairing the coherence of the message, use elliptical sentencing to carefully remove any unnecessary words and reduce wordiness.
Without fawning unnecessary attention, find a polite balance in your communications with restricted use of the words: please, sorry and thank you. The general rule of practice should be to use “please” only if its omission would make the text sound rude, impolite, or overly demanding.

Open, Organized, and Outlined
True open source demands open information. Make information more accessible with phrases and terminology most likely to match search engine queries. For example, before introducing a gerund (like Adding a widget) into a topic title or heading, try using the verb stem (Add a widget) to more closely match likely user searches.
Plan what needs to be communicated in a properly drafted outline. Closely examine what the user needs to know and make sure that you understand the purpose of each UI dialog. Using a structural and task-orientated approach, organize and shape information in a logical order to support the necessary user choices within the UI flow.
Consistent, Concise, and Contextual
Deliver, clearly and concisely, only the information that the user needs to know. By eliminating any notable redundancy or duplication during your mandatory text review, create task-orientated user strings that are concise and to the point. Be particularly sure to maintain firm grammatical consistency between items of the same menu depth.
Also, consider the contextual nature of information within the UI flow to determine the consistent use of full versus reduced grammar. Selectively remove all linking grammar, like articles, pronouns, and to be verbs, to create reduced-grammar strings for space-constrained menu options, headers, buttons, and longer strings within toasts and pop-ups. The types of words that can typically be removed in reduced grammar strings include:
- Articles (a, an, the)
- Determiners (this, that, their)
- Forms of the verb “to be”, i.e., I am, you are, he/she/it is, etc.

Use full grammar in all UI strings that are unhindered by space constraints, like descriptive body text.
Usable and Understandable
Make your text strings as understandable as possible by using both the correct point of view and verb tense in your messaging:
- First person. Avoid using the first person pronouns I, we, me, us, mine and our.
- Second person. “You” encourages use of the active voice and enhances the personal and informal tone synonymous with the Tizen brand. This point of view is also appropriate for instructions and procedural descriptions. Writing in the imperative form implies “you” without having to state it specifically.
- Third person. As a general rule, avoid using gender-specific pronouns in the third person, like he/she, him/her in favor of neuter pronouns like it (singular), they, them, their (plural).

Ensure that the information is as usable as possible by developing a common product terminology. Scan the favoured words and phrases in your UI texts and check to see if there are any other, more established, phrases better suited for your messaging.
Avoid some of the common grammatical pitfalls that might otherwise confuse user:
- False subjects : Avoid using there or it as substitutes for the real subject in your sentencing. These so-called “false subjects” are irritating because they immediately force the reader to search for the subject in the previous sentence.
- Don’t hyphenate or separate phrasal verbs. Verbs that consist of two words should never be hyphenated, and the two words should be kept together to avoid translation issues. For example, use “turn on GPS”, not “turn GPS on”.
- Third person. As a general rule, avoid using gender-specific pronouns in the third person, like he/she, him/her in favor of neuter pronouns like it (singular), they, them, their (plural).

Simple
Keep it simple. Remembering that the majority of product users are non-native English speakers, avoid using unfamiliar or overly complex words, and try to follow some of the more basic rules of Simple English :
- Restrict the length of noun clusters, i.e., compound nouns or appositives) to no more than 3 words.
- Restrict sentence length to no more than 20 words (procedural sentences) or 25 words (descriptive sentences).
- Restrict paragraphs to no more than 6 sentences (in descriptive text).
- Avoid slang and jargon while allowing for specific terminology.
- Make instructions as specific as possible.
- Use simple verb tenses (past, present, and future).
- Use active voice.
- Do not use present participles or gerunds (unless part of a Technical Name).
- Write sequential steps as separate sentences.
- Be careful with use of phrasal verbs.
