Emulator almost impossible to run

I have a Windows Vista 64 Bit OS, 4 GB RAM, Intel Core 2 Duo with Virtualization turned on, HAXM installed and running with 2 GB RAM allocated, the SDK installed properly and everything.

Though, whenever I try to run the emulator, it takes almost 10 minutes to boot up, and then runs incredibly slowly, with the icons in the emulator sometimes not working at all. Other times, it'll never boot up, even after hours. Is there anything I can do to remedy this, or perhaps an alternative to the emulator? The emulator manager runs just fine; Its the actual emulator with the issue.

You might need more RAM, I have 6GB on my laptop and I assign 2GB to emulator and everything runs smooth, I also underclock (!) the laptop from Windows control panel to prevent the emulator from throttling the CPU's and prevent entering turbo mode, seemed to make it more responsive. My second laptop has 4GB and it is very slow with the emulator. Note that additional memory is no guarantee that you will see any improvement in performance, I'm just commenting on my own experience with my laptops.

When you say assign to emulator, do you mean how much memory is allocated bin HAXM, or how much you assign to the emulator in the emulator manager? I'm only able to choose an assignment of 512 MB in the manager, with no other option to assign more. Is there a way around this?

I've got 2GB assigned for HAXM, and 512MB in the manager. You're right, 512MB is the only option for the emulator. To give you an idea of what to expect, the laptop launches and fully boots the emulator in less than 1 minute, frame rates are around 5-10 fps in my estimate, and in some apps frame rates drop to as low as 1 fps. Try assigning less than 2GB to HAXM.
