This presentation is very interesting imo: Communicating With Your Gear

As a companion device, the Gear must use data sent from the host device. With the introduction of Gear S, the need for constant companionship changes. The Gear S includes support for wifi and carrier service, expanding the reach of available data. When the wearable is tethered, or working in companion mode, moving data between host and wearable is accomplished through Samsung Accessory Protocol, or SAP. Large payloads of data can be moved seamlessly between devices. When the wearable is operating in standalone mode, the app must rely on wifi or the carrier service to provide that data. This session will provide details of moving data in both companion and standalone mode.
